Bad Penny

A new, fierce, offering from Ameer Azad, our Poet-In-Residence. Brace before clicking.

Bad Penny

Bad Penny

There’s a secret stash of data
In the bottom left of the brain drive
It calls you:
             BIG MAN
             GROOVY BABY
             PARTY BOY

It says:
The bad dream will come true
And the rug will be pulled out from under
    Comforts will be inverted
    Cars will explode
    They’re onto you
Atrophied limbs
No teeth
No hands

The populous grind sharp objects
in preparation for this moment
Psychiatrists tote mobile lobotomisers
in preparation for this moment
Searching cornered surfaces
for the kicks you made at birth

Calling:
             BIG MAN
             GROOVY BABY
             PARTY BOY

It is a refrigerated nerve
An age old ectoparasite
Frozen
Halfway through its
irreversible consumption
of the brain
Larvae in the muscle and and eye tissue
Forming cysts in the brain
As you obsessed over the mystery
Your unravelled cassette tape of events
Ignorance congealed to a pale hand
The one that met you in infancy
And covered your mouth

Calling you:
              BIG MAN
              GROOVY BABY
              PARTY BOY

The kicks you made were like the ones
you did at birth
It was a bad penny
The truth is revealed

Ameer Azad is our current Poet-in-Residence. Every now and then we find a voice that sings (or screams) to us. Those voices that show us something new - whether beautiful or repulsive - voices from out there that somehow resonate deeply. Voices we just 'get'. When that happens we graciously ask that they join us for a time. To live and scream along with us.

You can learn more about Ameer, his work and voice in his fantastic interview here.

We also invite you to follow Ameer on Instagram by hitting the button below.

We're constantly on the look out for new artists, creatives and initiatives to feature in TheNeverZine - so if you are, or know someone who is going their own way and doing their own thing on their own terms and would be a good fit to feature please smash that button below and get in contact. By talking to each other, and sharing our journeys, ideas and insights on creativity, art, mental health and resilience we can all create, share and thrive together. Nice thought that.
